Porcelain veneers

Create a picture-perfect smile! Porcelain veneers make a smile that’s worth sharing possible.

Do you think your smile is unattractive? Are your teeth badly stained? Have your teeth turned gray over time? Have you tried everything you can think of to whiten your teeth but to no avail? Would you believe me if I told you a picture-perfect smile is possible for you? Yes, there’s hope for a smile you can be proud of! Porcelain veneers have helped many achieve the smile they desire.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells, or layers of tooth-colored porcelain. They are designed to be placed on the front surfaces of your teeth to correct worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment or spacing, discoloration, and chips or cracks. While recreating the natural look of your teeth, porcelain veneers strengthen and add resilience much like natural tooth enamel. They improve appearance by changing the color, shape, size, and/or length of your teeth.

Who Needs Them?

If your teeth are severely discolored, you may be a candidate. Porcelain veneers can fix uneven teeth or spacing (minor twists, overlaps, small gaps), and chips or cracks. Wear and discoloration due to aging, genetic predisposition, consuming soft drinks, tea, or coffee, smoking, and using certain medications can also be fixed with porcelain veneers. They can turn the appearance of the darkest teeth to a bright white.

To determine if you are a good candidate for veneers, Dr. Davis will evaluate your oral health and discuss all available treatment options. Tooth preparation for veneers is irreversible, so it’s important to offer patients the most minimally invasive options first. There are other options that may provide the same results as veneers with minimal to no removal of tooth enamel.

If Porcelain Veneers are Your Best Option …

If veneers are your best option, we’ll walk you through treatment details: tooth preparation and what is necessary for them to look and fit correctly to achieve the smile you want to create. If there are health concerns, they must be addressed before the veneers can be placed.

The procedure usually requires three trips over the course of six weeks – a consultation and two to apply the veneers. Be prepared. Because the visits are comprehensive, they may require several hours of examination and preparation.

During your consultation, you’ll share your preferences for the shape, length, width, and color of the veneers. Dr. Davis needs to understand your objectives to ensure your treatment will meet your expectations.

When preparing your teeth, Dr. Davis removes less than a millimeter of each tooth’s enamel following administration of a local anesthetic, if needed. He uses a tool called a bur to remove enamel. Removing enamel creates room for the porcelain veneers to fit well and accurately restore the natural function of your teeth.

Next, an impression of your teeth is made.

Once Dr. Davis has completed his examination and your smile is designed, the model is sent to a dental laboratory and your veneers are custom made. You can expect anywhere from one to four weeks for your veneers to arrive and for application to begin.

Applying Veneers

Dr. Davis will temporarily place each veneer on the prepared teeth to examine fit and color. He will remove and trim the veneers repeatedly to achieve a proper fit.

A strong bond is critical for esthetic perfection and veneer function. Your teeth will be cleaned, polished, and etched to allow for a strong bonding process. An adhesive layer of light-sensitive resin is placed between your tooth and the veneer. Then a special curing light is used to harden the resin bonding the veneer to your tooth.

As the veneers are properly placed, excess cement will be removed. Your bite will be evaluated and adjusted. Then they will be polished to create your picture-perfect smile.

Do Porcelain Veneers Require Special Care?

Dr. Davis will want to see how well your mouth is functioning responding to the veneers following application. You will be scheduled for a follow-up and evaluation within seven days of treatment.

If you grind or clench your teeth, Dr. Davis may fit you with a nighttime bite guard to prevent you from damaging your smile. Chipped or fractured porcelain veneers cannot be repaired. They must be replaced. And that is costly!

Regular dental cleanings every six months are still important. Keep every cleaning appointment with your dental hygienist. Porcelain veneers should be polished with a specially formulated, non-abrasive paste. And Dr. Davis needs to inspect your new smile for signs of potential failure just as he does fillings you may have.

A few days following treatment, there will probably be some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. Although veneers are very strong, they are also brittle. Do not bite or chew on hard objects (fingernails, ice, Corn Nuts, bones, etc.) and don’t use your teeth to open or tear packages. Dr. Davis will advise you against foods that could cause damage, like carrots, hard or very sticky candies, and popcorn.

Veneers do not require special daily care. Brush and floss them routinely and care for them the same way you take care of your original teeth.

They are extremely durable. And with proper, routine care, they will last seven to fifteen years before requiring replacement.
