Our Davis Dental Hygienists play a key part in helping patients maintain a clean, healthy smile. They remind them that taking care of their mouths, teeth and gums positively impacts appearance and overall health.
What is a Dental Hygienist?
Our dental hygienists work closely with Dr. Davis, Dr. Hokanson and their dental assistants. They take care of patients in the following ways during each routine visit:
- Clean teeth
- Examine mouths for oral diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis
- Provide other preventive dental care
- Educate with ways to improve and maintain clean, healthy smiles
What do Dental Hygienists do?
Our hygienists clean teeth with hand tools, powered tools and sometimes ultrasonic devices. Once tartar and plaque are removed, they polish a patient’s teeth. The tooth polisher is a power tool that works a lot like an automatic toothbrush. Some hygienists remove stains from teeth with an air polishing tool, which sprays a combination of air, water and baking soda. Our hygienists also take dental x-rays to check for tooth or jaw problems.
In addition to the above mentioned tasks, our dental hygienists may also do the following:
- Apply sealants and fluorides
- Provide anesthetic for dental hygiene appointments
- Provide nitrous oxide sedation for hygiene appointments
- Keep records of patients’ care and treatment plans
- Teach patients how to properly brush and floss for good oral hygiene
Helping patients develop and maintain good oral health habits is foremost in a dental hygienist’s mind. This can also include an explanation about how good and poor diet affects oral health, how to select the right toothbrush or how to use other oral-care devices.
Our dental hygienists follow specific rules and protocols to help diagnose and treat our patients. They are sensitive to our patients’ emotions.
